History Of Cola Stain Glass And Cola   by Willard Ray

The history of cola stain glass and cola has made its name and brand a household word around the world through clever advertisement. One of the boldest and, at the time, most expensive advertising campaigns was the Tiffany lamps made in 1892. Today the logo is on more then just a table top lamps, it is a sought after collectible for soda fans worldwide.

The first company drink formula was made by John Pemberton. The product was nothing like the soda of today, it was a wine based drink called Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. Prohibition brought about the first non alcoholic formula in 1886. It is this syrupy invention that was the great grandfather to the famous soda loved all over the world today. By 1892 the company had experienced huge growth and sought out new ways to make their brand known to expand their market. The company set aside $11,401 for advertising, a huge sum for the time.

The 1892 advertising campaign consisted of signs, free samples, soda fountain urns, clocks, and stained-glass lamps, all with the company’s name engraved upon them. Those Tiffany lamps became a phenomenon and are sought after by collectors over 100 hundred years later.

During the mid to late 1800’s stained glass has become tremendously popular thanks to the developments of John La Farge and the well known Louis Comfort Tiffany. Tiffany took his techniques and designed the stained glass lamps named after him. The advertisers saw this new furniture trend for what it was, an opportunity to expose their logo to the masses. The company had Tiffany lamps made and salesmen gave them away with large purchases of their product. Owners proudly displayed the Tiffany lamps as a symbol of status in their soda shops where patrons could see them. And that is how the icon was born.

The logo’s marketing strategy proved priceless to the young company and sparked a series of Tiffany style collectibles throughout their history. Today most restaurants and bars that serve coke products have the logo displayed. This gives coke free advertising to the patrons and it is all because of the tradition started with those lamps.

Stained glass memorabilia is no longer for just businesses that serve the product. It can be purchased by anyone who would like to own a piece with the iconic name. Many internet sites still carry the lamps ranging in size from full size pool lamps to simple table lamps. Older Tiffany style pieces sometimes appear in auctions or on antiques sites. Some of the original advertisement pieces are on display at their museum in Atlanta.

Today the logo has expended beyond signs, soda fountain urns, clocks, and Tiffany lamps. It is placed on cups, coffee mugs, plates, clothing, household appliances and toys.

Placing the coke logo on Tiffany lamps was a brilliant and beautiful advertising campaign for history of cola stain glass and cola. The company turned a hugely popular trend into a free source of public advertising that is still paying off one hundred years later.
