Antique glass lamp shades are uniformly reknowned for their exquisite design. But how were these antiques originally introduced to the world? After the invention of gas power for homes in the late 19th century, gas lamps became a fixture of the home. Decorations began to include lamp shades resulting in ornate and colorful antique glass lamp shades. The most well-known among these are the Tiffany lamp shades with the Handel shades not far behind.

Louis Tiffany, a 20th century artist, was the reason for the development of Tiffany-like. Louis Tiffany was a family member of the businessman who initiated the eponymous jewelry chain that is scattered in towns around the world at this time. At the time, Tiffany practiced art and headed an interior design firm. His investigations of stained glass techniques stirred him to fashion glass lamp shades. The Tiffany lamp shades are made up of panes of stained glass framed in metal, the construction of which mirrors church windows. However, one remaining alternative is to create your own stained shade.

An important step is to obtain the right kind of glass. The size, color and shape of the underlying glass will play a role in the decision of each person. The size is important, as smaller shades less than six inches in diameter at its widest point will be hard to paint. The color should be appropriate to your final theme. The shape can be drawn from a number of possibilities, including the student style, the schoolhouse style, and the gas style.

The torchiere is suitable for imposing your own designs. They are versatile as they can be moved to different locations as need be in the house. The tall lamp projects light upward, casting a soft glow on everything. The shade is frequently shaped like a broad conical shape opening toward the ceiling for shining the light across a wide area, which means the light softly filters evenly across the area. The diameters and colors are pretty diverse for torchiere shades. Ensure you have the correct width by measuring the top diameter, in addition to the bottom width.

Two more popular shapes that are amenable to painting are the gas lamp shade and the hurricane shade. Hurricane shades are characterized by a vase-like design that widens in the waist and subsequently getting narrow into a thin neck. Because of its curvy shape it is a very striking light piece.
